The Great Fence of USA

Probably inspired on the great wall of China, George W. Bush signed the bill that will allow USA to built a 700-mile border fence along 1/3 of U.S. Border with Mexico. Nobody knows how much will it cost but the value of $1.2 Billion dollars were allocated to this project with the signature of this bill.

He expects with this fence to control the flux of illegal immigrants that go through this border. "Unfortunately, the United States has not been in complete control of its borders for decades and therefore illegal immigration has been on the rise," Bush said.

Many people criticizes this politic not only abroad but also inside the USA. One example is T.J. Bonner, head of the National Border Patrol Council which states that: "A fence will slow people down by a minute or two, but if you don't have the agents to stop them it does no good. We're not talking about some impenetrable barrier".

Well I think that T.J. Bonner is quite right, not only USA will spend billions of dollars, but also will give a bad image of itself, for a measure that ultimately will have little effect. But looking on the bright side , in a far future tourists will have another attraction to see in the USA: "The Great Fence of USA".

It can build a fence a mile high but it won't stop mexicans or others trying to get to the USA. The fence may reduce the flow but it will be curcumvented - For example, immigrants may be hidden in lorries or be transported by boat and so on - as we see in Europe.

The push/pull factor is a main driver for immigration. While there is pressure to emigrate from nations like Mexico (the push)and while there are opportunities for employment in the USA (the pull) it will continue.

I agree. And I think it is cute that you said "lorries". In any case - this idea is very offensive to me. The statue of liberty says: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddle masses yearning to breath free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Patriotism is dangerous. It defines who is 'us' and who is 'them'. Instead of working for the betterment of humanity, now we're only concerned with 'us'.
Also, did we learn nothing from the berlin wall?

This is just a physical fence and it will solve nothing, maby only calls up angryness. The real fence is is trade barriers wich hold the poor poor and preventing the rich from getting poor.A strong internationalorganisation(as was posted some time ago) is what this world needs.Redivide the assets and flatten out the wealth to everyones bennefit.Instead of building we should be breaking down the walls that already exist. For me living in a first world country it would mean giving in financialy, but what a gain there would be to expected.
